The rock mechanics research at University of Utah is focused on broad major areas of rock mechanics. The mining engineering department also houses some state-of-the-art rock mechanics equipment (click here)

1. Experimental rock mechanics

  • Effect of mineralization on the strength and fracture propagation in granite
  • Effect of hydrogen storage in salt cavern (planned research)
  • High strain rate behavior of single crystal (NSF Sponsored project)

2. Mathematical Modeling

  • Investigation of strata control behavior in coal and hard rock mines
  • Relationship between micro-mechanical and macro-mechanical behavior of rock
  • Effect of mineralization on strength of granite
